Always keep a multi-purpose dry powder or foam (AFFF) spray extinguisher conforming to BS EN3 in your car.

Steps to take in the event of a car fire

  • Don't panic (Mr Mainwaring)
  • Stop the car if you are in motion.Switch off the engine.Get all passengers out of the vehicle.Release bonnet catch - Do not open the bonnet as this could introduce more oxygen to the fire.Get a safe distance from the vehicle and stay away, Warn onlookers or approaching traffic of the impending danger.Dial 999 and ask for the fire brigade.
  • Warn oncoming traffic and pedestrian.

Only if you believe it is safe to do so, Using only a dry powder or foam extinguisher attempt to put out the fire with. If the fire is in the engine compartment, aim the extinguisher through the radiator grille or under the edge of the bonnet do not open the bonnet. If you are in any doubt, don't attempt to tackle the fire, your car can be replaced you can't !!!.

Caravan fire safety

  • Turn off any pilot lights lamps or internal electrical appliances before towing.Install smoke alarms in the caravan as well as having a suitable fire extinguisher and fire blanket near the exit.Create a fire escape plan that considers all occupants of a caravan (people may be disabled) familiarise yourself with any fire routines or equipment installed at the place where you are staying Ensure that all electrical and gas equipment fitted is tested regularly and is in good working orderGas cylinders on caravans should always be external, secure and with make sure the valves face away from the caravan.Keep heaters away from the internal (flammable) fittings in caravansNever leave children or pets unattended in a caravan.Turn off any lamps lights or unnecessary electrical equipment before going to bed
  • Never leave cooking unattended and always keep matches or lighters in safe place

In the event of a caravan fire

  • Raise the alarm and get everyone out of the caravan and to a safe distance.Call the Fire Brigade.Only If it is safe to do so, cut off the gas and electricity supply to the caravan.Inform the site management.Do not take personal risks. The caravan can be replaced - you cannot!
  • Do not return inside under any circumstances.

Small Boat Fire (marine) Safety

  • Fit smoke detectors.Make sure the furnishings are fire retardantHave your electrical systems checked regularly
  • Use an approved container for carrying and storing fuel.
Recommended boat Firefighting Equipment

One of the following at least should be present on your boat:

  • Dry Powder 1.5 kg
  • AFFF 2 litre
  • Foam 2 litre
  • Carbon Dioxide (CO2) 2 kg
  • Bucket 9 litre
  • Fire Blanket 0.75m x 0.75m
Action to be taken in event of fire:
  • Call the coastguard VHF channel 16. For moored boats , evacuate all passengers and call the fire brigade on 999. If it is safe to do so attempt to tackle the fire yourself. Make sire life jackets are worn. If possible isolate petrol and gas supplies. Avoid and alert other craft.
  • Prepare an emergency life raft.
